How do I get viruses not listed on iNat onto the site?

There’s various viruses that affect Canna lilies, like this one https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/223400390, But none of them (https://extension.okstate.edu/fact-sheets/plant-viruses-infecting-cannas.html) listed on iNaturalist, and I don’t…know how to find the scientific names?

Is there a way to add them to iNaturalist so the observations can be identified beyond the level of “Virus”?

The best way is probably to try to find information about the scientific name or taxonomy through google and add a flag at the narrowest known taxon (“Kingdom: Viruses”, if all else fails) requesting for them to be added.

There are a few references here for each Virus affecting Canna: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canna_virus

TAV and CMV belong to Bromoviridae, BYMV and CaYSV are members of Potyvirus (Potyviridae), and CYMB is a member of Badnavirus (Caulimoviridae).

To add to that, if I’m asking for a new species to be added, I like to provide a few reputable sources too for the curator to look at.

Three of the five listed on the okstate fact sheet are already on iNat:
https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1554891-Potyvirus-phaseoluteum
https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1554939-Cucumovirus-cmv
https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1554942-Cucumovirus-tav

If you want the other two, you should flag https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/322784-Potyvirus for https://ictv.global/taxonomy/taxondetails?taxnode_id=202404587 and flag https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/468187-Badnavirus for https://ictv.global/taxonomy/taxondetails?taxnode_id=202402833.

Thank you, I had no clue where to start looking to find that much info on them!

https://ictv.global/taxonomy/find_the_species works pretty well – better than the search on their regular taxonomy page (https://ictv.global/taxonomy)
