So I finally figured out how to change photos for a taxon but it takes a while to scroll through all the observations there are. How do I pick out a specific observation? Every time I try to this is what pops up “Tip: enter the ID of an observation in the search field if you want to choose photos from a specific observation.” Every time I tried to put in the observation id it would so no observation found. For example, something like 395166409. Any help will be much appreciated!
It should work to put in the observation ID, but it defaults to only showing Research Grade photos so if the observation you’re trying to find isn’t RG, it won’t show up unless you change the settings at the top. If it’s still not working, then something sounds like it’s going wrong.
Could you describe more precisely what page you are on and what “this” is? I’m unclear of where you are working on selecting photos for the taxon page. In the “Choose photos for this taxon” window, the search bar in the upper left is for choosing a taxon (e.g., a species), not a specific observation*. The only thing I know to do is scroll through the observations (RG or all) and drag and drop desired images in the right-hand panel (arranging them in the order I desire). Use the “Prev” and “Next” buttons to see additional pages of photos; about 40 are displayed per page. So if there are hundreds of images of a given species, you may end up having to scour through a lot of pics. Make sure it’s worth the effort.
*Correction: I just learned that you can enter an observation number to look up images. Nice trick!
Make sure the drop-down “Photos From” is set to “Observations” - then you should be able to enter an observation ID and click search (or press Enter)
The observation ID you entered cannot exist. It’s essentially just a counter of observations uploaded to iNat and it’s currently still under 300000000. Where did you get your number from?
For this to work, you need to use the number in the link of the relevant observation
I tried that. Can you give us the link to the taxon you want to change? And the obs that number (should) link to?
https://www.inaturalist.org/search?q=395166409 that is broken
There must be a typo in the ID you are using. The highest ID in the system as of this post is 270584875. (You can see the updated highest number in the first observation listed at https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?subview=table&verifiable=any&place=any)
That appears to be a photo ID, rather than an observation ID, since it links to an example you uploaded yourself: https://www.inaturalist.org/photos/395166409. The observation ID that photo is associated with is 223045142, so if you enter that number into the search box it should give you what you want. You can copy the number from one of the View urls in the Associated Observations section on the righthand side of the photo page.
Thank you Bazwal! I did what you said and it worked. Much appreciated.
