I cannot upload any observations using the new iNaturalist iOS app

Platform: iOS 18.5

App version number, if a mobile app issue: 1.0.5 (168)

Browser, if a website issue: na

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages: na

Screenshots of what you are seeing:

Description of problem:

Step 1: Attempt to upload an observation in the new iNaturalist app

Step 2: observations enter the app with the “up” arrow surrounded by dots (what I think is the “ready to upload” indicator)

Step 3: press the exclamation mark “sync” button to attempt to upload observations

Step 4: the green banner will instantly turn white and say “x number of observations uploaded”, and the “up” arrow on each observation will begin to fill their uploading progress circle (photo 1)

Step 5: the uploading progress circle around the “up” arrow will revert to the circle of dots, assumedly saying that the observation has not been uploaded and is in “ready to upload” status again. (photo 2)

No amount of reattempting to “sync” observations will get observations to successfully upload using the new app. (edit: but I haven’t had this issue before I updated the app to this latest version)

This happens on both Wi-Fi and cellular.

I can upload these observations on the iNaturalist classic app without issue.

I have had that problem, also.
When I check the website the observations are there.
The only way I’ve found to clear the app is to delete the observation and do the observation again. So far that has worked, they go through just as they should.
But it is a bug.
Is it this?

What happens if you just log out of the app and log back in?

Didn’t think to try that! I will next time…
but it shouldn’t happen to begin with.

I’m not saying it should. I’m trying to determine what works and what doesn’t, that can help us understand the cause of the issue.

I get it. And I will try next time.
I also haven’t tried just leaving it on that app to see if it catches up later, since the ‘stuck’ observation does show up correctly in both iNat classic and the website.

deleting the app and logging in again did resolve the issue for me. I didn’t try to log out without deleting the app - so can’t speak on that

I tried to get it to do this again… and I can’t…the app has been working as expected.
So, I guess it’s fixed? (This is why I don’t like to bug report!)

OK, I was finally able to replicate this in version 1.0.5 by:

  1. Opening an existing, synced observation
  2. Going to its edit page and tapping the + button to add more media
  3. Choosing the camera option and taking a photo
  4. Saving changes, then uploading the observation

As far as I can tell, this is not happening in the beta version (1.0.6) we hope to release publicly this week, so I’m pretty sure onc eit’s out and you update the app it should fix it for you. FWIW, when I updated to the beta version and tried to upload the observation that was uploading, everything looks to have worked out and the observation no longer shows as needed to upload. I’ll try it a few more times.
