I do not have a picture of the caterpillar, although it was reddish orange with black spots, and it was dancing on a crab apple tree with many others, almost in unison? Can someone explain this to me? Why did they dance and what species were they?
My best guess:
Some dance when they sense your presence, as a warning or such. Predator avoidance? I have seen sawfly larvae in groups acting as if they are one, rising up and returning prone. If we all move maybe you’ll think we are large, or you won’t be likely to pick out just one, we’ll confuse you?
I have also seen single larva do this wiggly dance…
As for who is it? I don’t know. Larva can be confusing.

I bet @Thunderhead is right. I have seen my stingless bees swarm to look larger when their pipa is threatened. Very cool some of the things small creatures do for defense.
