App version number, if a mobile app issue (shown under About in the side menu): 0.59.12 (155)
Operating System / Device (e.g. iOS 18.2, iPhone SE): ios 18.3.2; iphone 12
Screenshots of what you are seeing (instructions for taking a screenshot on computers and mobile devices: https://www.take-a-screenshot.org/):
Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):
Step 1: Take photo with non-ai camera; click green checkmark
Step 2: The “add an ID” screen appears but says “you are offline. tap to reload. Offline suggestions…” This is incorrect. I am online but have about 110kbps up/down of bandwidth. This was enough bandwidth to get an ID on the old app.

I concur that the the “You are off-line” message is confusing. IF I were offline, how does iNat thereafter offer up suggested IDs? It’s a counter-intuitive message or behavior.

The offline ID’s are fine. It means that it’s falling back to a lower-accuracy local AI model.
I’m afraid I still don’t understand. To me, “off-line” means I’m not connected to the internet or I don’t have a strong enough connection for CV to do it’s thing. So, what is iNat accessing when you suggest it is using a “lower-accuracy local AI model”??
Similar to Seek, iNaturalist Next does have offline suggestions. So when you see the “offline” message, it means that it’s using the offline suggestions.

Sorry to be dense about this, but does this mean the App is searching for IDs from info stored locally on my iPhone? That doesn’t seem correct. I still don’t seem to have a solid concept of what “offline” refers to in this context.
Yes, the offline model suggestions are part of what you download when you download or update the app.

I am also encountering this message, and have a slightly different question about it: if I type the ID name myself instead of choosing a suggestion, it shows nothing and says “No results found for that search.” It refuses to let the typed ID just remain there anyway, which the old app does, so I can’t even just save it with the “placeholder” (but accurate) name for when I have better connectivity, which the old app does. I have all 3 “connection arcs” showing on my iPhone, and Speed Test shows 13.24 Mbps upload.
This coincided with site downtime, so you should be able to look up species and save them in the future when both you and iNat are online.

I find that the app constantly thinks I am offline, but I just have to refresh to get an ID -
I’ve also found this confusing though…as I have been online on other apps and often have good connectivity just a moment before…I’m not sure its an issue only in low bandwidths (?)

Thanks Carrie! I had actually wondered if it was the site and not me last night, the way it was behaving. I’ll see how it behaves in the future; I only recently downloaded Next when I got the message about a new version. Figured I’d get Next and also leave the one I’m used to installed for a while
