Please fill out the following sections to the best of your ability, it will help us investigate bugs if we have this information at the outset. Screenshots are especially helpful, so please provide those if you can.
App version number, if a mobile app issue (shown under About in the side menu): 0.55.3, Using Apple iOS 18.1.1 on iPhone 15 Pro
Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):
The iNat Next app is very slow for me, and this seems to lead to me not being able to use the app in most areas near where I live (where I get 2 or 3 bars of LTE on my phone). In these situations, other web-based applications work fine, including for uploading images. However, when I use the iNat Next app, I get a message stating “You are offline” when I attempt to “Add an ID.”
Related, when I am able to upload an image on slow cellular data or wifi, the upload process takes significantly longer than even on the old iNat app. I uploaded a series of photos using both the iNat and iNat Next apps, in sequence. For the same photos, iNat Next took 2.1x longer than iNat. Is there a reason for this?
Hi coreyhusic, thanks for reporting. Are there parts of the app that you’re noticing are slow aside from uploads & ID suggestions? The more specific you can be, the easier it will be for us to replicate.
(Fwiw, what you’re seeing on ID suggestions is how we intended the app to work – switching to offline suggestions ensures that you’re not stuck waiting for an internet-based suggestion while you’re on 2-3 bars of LTE).
Thanks for the response. I have only noticed it being especially slow on uploads. Everything else seems to work about as fast as I’d expect on the slower internet connections.
And thanks for that clarification, I did not realize that. Unfortunately, I have found the offline ID suggestions to be rather unhelpful and often wrong, so I’m often left waiting for the previous observation to upload before I can get the better suggested IDs. Lately, I’ve just been putting my phone on airplane mode and queuing all of my observations to get them in the app, then dealing with uploads and IDs when I have better connection.
