Description of problem: Upon release of the Identification Pilot, there was a completion indicator- if you had reviewed all of the new user observations in a daily set, then the Identification Pilot cutout on the homepage would indicate that you were done. At some point this changed, and now I can never tell when a new batch of pilot observations is available for me to review. It’s slightly annoying and confusing, and I don’t think that the completion marker was deliberately removed.
Step 1: Be in the New User Identification Pilot program.
Step 2: Click Identify Observations on the right side of your homepage.
Step 3: Review/identify all of the observations that show up, making sure if you click Review All to give iNaturalist time to process your tickmarks.
Step 4: Return to your homepage, and see if the Identification Pilot box remains the same as before.
I’ve been in the Identification Pilot for the last few weeks, and I’ve rarely gotten the completion indicator even though I’ve also rarely seen any observations to ID through the Pilot. Clicking to ID through the Pilot about 50 times I’ve seen a total of maybe 15 observations to ID. It seems pretty futile.
Hi @etherjunkie — thanks for taking the time to write this up and for sharing screenshots.
Just to clarify, there actually hasn’t been a completion indicator for the Identification Pilot at any point. The pilot box on the homepage hasn’t had a state that changes once you’ve reviewed all of the available observations, so nothing was deliberately removed.
That said, your feedback makes a lot of sense. It’s reasonable to want a clear signal for when you’ve worked through the current batch versus when new observations are available, and I understand how the current behavior can feel confusing or slightly frustrating - here’s the original post when we launched the experiment.
Sorry for the confusion — that’s the state shown after you’ve enrolled in the experiment but before it has run (it runs daily), or on days when it can’t find any observations that match the criteria (e.g., new users, taxa where you’ve made multiple improving IDs), resulting in a batch size of zero. There hasn’t ever been functionality to detect whether you’ve completed identifying your daily batch - but I agree that would be nice.
Thank you for clarifying! On those occasions when I don’t get this, but instead get the “Click to Identify” there are still usually zero observations there to ID.
