iNat and discoveries of new ecological interactions

During a late night nature observation back in 2024 I stumbled upon a fungi from the genus Ganoderma (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/196094075) that was exudating some form of secretion that ended up attracting ants, which appeared to be consuming or gathering the substance. After sharing the pictures with some friends, they pointed out that a Little Fire Ant colony appeared to be nesting within the fungi (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/196094076) while also consuming the substance and tending to the Ganoderma. After a lot of back and forth, this whole discussion culminated in a 2 and a half year endeavor that now resulted in a short scientific communication which describes the first interaction between the Little Fire Ant and a Fungi, as well as the first comprehensive analysis of food sources and preferences of this extremely adaptable and generalist ant. We highlight how citizen science is extremely important to help us understand the ecology of different species, and how even famous invasive species may have deep ecological gaps that can be explored and solved through a community effort. The study can be accessed directly through the journal page and on Research Gate. Hope you all enjoy it!
