iNaturalist app has stopped working on Android 6

Same is occuring on my device (Huawei Y6 II)

I’ll add myself to the list. I have a Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro, Android version 6.0.1 I haven’t been able to access the app since Sunday, 8/22. I hope your developers will have pity on those of us with cheapo phones and get this fixed. I really miss the app!

Same story. Really miss the app.

Same problem with Android 6.0.1
Any hope?

Isn’t Android 6 from 2015?
Are some phones still running that older version?
My phone (Pixel 3) is on Android version 11.

Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to figure out who is having he problem and if it is down the road for me?

@sandboa Yeah it seems to be a sign of the times with technology with having to constantly upgrade all the time. It’s expensive and wasteful.

For people with problems you can still take photos for records but you have to upload them separately via a web browser until this gets fixed.

Sorry for the late reply here but since the app crashes before anyone can send us log files we’ve had to investigate it by looking at crash reports.

We have a potential fix in the next beta version of the app (version 1.23.16 - 505) and we’d love it if you all could test it out and let us know if you’re able to use the app after installing that version. There are two options here:

  1. Join the iNat Android beta testing program and wait until that version is available in the Google Play Store (might not be for another day from now). Then update to that version and try to open the app.

or

  1. If you want to test it immediately, use your phone’s browser and go to https://github.com/inaturalist/iNaturalistAndroid/releases/tag/v1.23.16%2B505 then download the .apk file to your device and install it.

There will be a pop-up asking permission for the app to be installed on your device.

If that beta version is still not working, please let us know and provide your device’s model (eg Samsung Galaxy S7) to us either here or at help@inaturalist.org - that will help us find it in the crash reports.

No one’s responded here, but someone did via help@inaturalist.org and says the beta was working for them. We’ve pushed version 1.23.16 - 505 to a 100% rollout so it should appear in the Google Play Store for everyone in the next day or two.

Thank you for solving this problem and helping us with older phones get back to iNating!! I have quite a backlog and it’s so much easier on the app than downloading photos and using a pc.

:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: THANKS to the geeks and you for following up with us!

Glad it’s working and I’m sorry we released it with such a rough bug. Thanks for following up.
