iNaturalist Enhancement Suite Chrome extension

EDIT: As discussed below, version 1.0.0 adds the ability to get the CV score for all images in an observation, not just the first, as well as the ability to crop an image in-place and get the CV score for the crop. It also adds displaying the CV score itself as a percentage. All of these features are toggleable in the extension options.

Original post for the release of version 0.9.0:

Finally :crossed_fingers: fixed :crossed_fingers: the timing issue with how the DOM context script gets injected into the page, which was what was causing the ā€œcolor visionā€ feature to not work sometimes–and which seemed anecdotally to have gotten significantly worse lately. Let me know if you notice any issues.

You can install the extension here if you don’t have it.

Happy identifying!

Yes - thank you. Have been refreshing 3 times before the colours … finally landed. Now it is instant !

Works perfectly for me. Can never thank you enough for your great work :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: .

This is the latest open thread for this extension I think, but this belongs to the most recent update:

Thanks for adding these, they do help in difficult cases.

Can I ask to change the green color though? It really clashes with the green ā€œRGā€ indicator. As in, I now no longer can know if an observation is RG from just peripheral vision. The RG used to be the only solid green area on the screen and now it isn’t.

These two new green buttons just started showing up underneath images this morning on the website for me. My initial skepticism was replaced by joy when I (daringly) clicked on each to see how they function. Here’s an example of a Scored image:

I think these should result in a major positive impact on identifications. Kudos to @sessilefielder for implementing these.

Here’s an example from my pal @jcochran706 of the cropping feature (not that a Virginia Opossum is difficult for CV to ID): Original, cropped for CV, CV suggestions:

I agree. Maybe a blue or dark grey as an alternative?

That is soooooo cool, @sessilefielder, thanks a bunch!!!

And you can now get individual CV suggestions for each image - brilliant.

Black text on white - and the frame can carry the colour ?

PS I’m a plant person so often ā€˜everything’ on my screen is green, green and more green.

You beat me to the punch; the new version got approved faster than I expected. I updated the first post in this thread with an outline of the new features. I hope you guys enjoy them; I’m excited about them, as they’re stuff *I* find very useful when identifying and previously had to use cumbersome manual steps to do.

Yes, I’m happy to change or make configurable the button colors, as well as any other feedback you have. I also need to turn the buttons off for audio, which I realized belatedly.

I’m particularly interested in how you find the auto-populating of the native iNat identification box when you select an suggestion from one of ā€œmyā€ lists–I think that has the potential to be the wonkiest bit, and I debated about whether or not to even have it (vs. having you copy or manually type in the suggestion). It’s worked well for me so far, though.

I just came across this and I love it! What I find especially useful are the identification stats. This gives me a very quick sense of four things:

1. How active the person is at identifying this taxon or how new they are to the taxon (overall number of IDs).

2. How well the identifier’s concept has been accepted by the community (improving over leading and maverick).
3. Whether the person has added identifications to the taxon before or is just starting (leading over improving).

Thanks @sessilefielder !

Defaults to display common name - but I prefer the scientific name first ?

Hi, forum moderators touched base on this briefly - rather than create separate topics for new updates to this user-created extension, it would be best to keep the discussion in one location. That is why we updated the topic title to something more all-encompassing. You should be able to edit the first post in the topic to be more general, but if not let us know and we can update it for you.

Ah, this setting, right? I’ll have to see if I can infer it from the structure of the response.

I like that. Would minimize any peripheral interference.

@sessilefielder Everything else looks great so far - I’m really enjoying this, thankyou!

For me it works just great. It’s an amazing addition. As always, infinite thanks for your hard work :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: .

Awesome! Really love how I can see the confidence percentage now! Thank you a lot!

Another small muscle memory thing to maybe think about. Every once in a while there’s an observation w/o media (or the media don’t load for whatever reason), which makes the buttons jump to the top, like so:

This persists to the next observation(s) as long as the ID modal is up:

– and I like that so much better! Can the buttons be on top all the time?

Reason is that so far ā€œthings at the bottomā€ has always meant ā€œmultiple imagesā€. Now there’s other ā€œthings at the bottomā€ and I find myself hitting alt-right on every observation. I’m sure I’ll get over it, but consider putting the buttons at the top?

I can probably make that configurable as well.
