We don’t think any uptick in traffic after we come back online will cause problems. We should have enough capacity to deal with that kind of a spike. BUT, only one way to find out for sure…
¡Muy bien!
Since a few people have mentioned/asked about donations, here’s a link that will allow you to donate to iNaturalist even while the site is still down. Thankfully, our donation system (like the iNatForum) is separate from the core iNat infrastructure and unaffected by the downtime.
In addition to the technical infrastructure required to sustain iNaturalist as it grows, we are also working hard on organizational development to make sure that iNaturalist can have a long and thriving future. We sincerely appreciate your kind words and dedication, especially in tough times like this.
You should post this on your Twitter feed and any other feed you have. This is a huge thing happening to iNat. People around the world post and depend on this app/site. You need to let the media know what is happening. Even though they might not have any clue what iNat is, they will know if you alert them.
They have been: https://twitter.com/inaturalist/status/1563420848425275392?s=20&t=RS8xYkkagCy-rhz62UIKwA

Edit: I thought you meant posting about the outage in general, if you mean they should post about donation requests everywhere, I agree they should do more of that ;)
@kueda “Later tonight” in what time zone? I’m in Australia
North America. It’s currently 9:10pm in California, August 27th.
Thanks!
Made a donation. Should have done it long ago. When iNat comes back I need to change my profile from reading “…obsessed with butterflies” to “Obsessed with iNat.”
Thanks for the encouragement, I just posted something similar to what I wrote above on Twitter.
I should have been more specific.
Let National media know what is going on, not just Twitter and other social media outlets. It might be something a national media outlet would cover for many reasons. The top reason being that a major server outage, of a major server company, caused a huge turmoil for a world-wide, renowned website.
I just donated some bucks!
Come on people! Let’s give back to iNaturalist!
Welcome to the forums
Welcome to the forums,
I am guessing a lot of users are finding their inat fix among the diverse humans here
Please help and get the site up and running again. I had to do a terrible thing and go outside earlier. It was terrifying. Thanks to all the people working hard behind the scenes and giving up their weekend.
Firstly, welcome to the forums
You aren’t alone :-)
3 cheers squared for the Inat team for all the hard work and patient updates

Regarding withdrawal symptoms
It may help to get to an inat support group
This forum is one for sure,
In India we have multiple inat focused WhatsApp groups , all of us are there chatting and wondering, and sharing inat material.
And posting funny memes of waiting
Meanwhile i have an event that ends today wondering if this is a worthwhile excuse to extend the event
Thank you for the welcome. I get the feeling that being a newbie to “The Forum” is a bad thing.
Oh no
not like like, sorry
genuinely welcome to the forums :-)
it is an awesome place and I am sure you will enjoy the true inat culture of warmth, friendliness and great support
I don’t think being a newbie to the forum is a bad thing, quite the opposite. Welcome!
Thought i learnt from previous events and have allowed a margin of a few days for people to upload their final data, so I guess it is ok to leave the event ending as it is.
