iNaturalist Next App Soft Launch for iPhones

@rafapsilva @sbushes @masonmaron The bugfix version (0.59.13) is rolling out now, so please be sure to update your app. Now you’ll be able to long press the AI camera button to select multiple photos from your photo library at once.

Yes, that works! Thanks for the fix. I wonder if it’d be a good update to allow the user to change what that button defaults to. For example, I tend to take photos normally with my phone camera and then upload them after, so being able to replace the default AI camera option with the multiple photo upload option would feel more user-friendly for me.

That’s usually my work flow, too. Take picture with normal phone camera and than later upload them.
But I usually just go to my gallery, select the images I want and share them the the iNaturalist app (at least it works this way on Android, not sure about IOS).

this is a minor nitpick in the grand scheme of the app, but I would really highly like for the “Save” button to be larger than, or at least an equal size to, the “Upload Now” button. I absolutely never willingly upload bunches of photos over a cell connection while out and about, or at least not immediately upon making an observation. I’ve held my phone in many contorted ways using the old app and just barely managed to tap the giant Save button without compromising my setup; I just wish it were a bit easier to select it in the new app while using my phone in one hand and holding a branch, bug, etc. in my other hand.
I have been using the iNat Next app primarily lately though as for some reason the geolocation in the old iPhone app seems to be borderline broken – it no longer successfully narrows down below about 12m precision in most cases, it just keeps searching and the accuracy circle wanders around in realtime even when I am physically not moving.

Hello! I don’t know if this is a known bug but,

Sometimes when I go back to my obserations they are missing the uploaded photo. It’s happening a lot lately. Anyone else?

Thanks in advance!

Are you closing the app or your phone during upload? See https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/inaturalist-next-losing-audio-records-after-latest-update/63736

Hello! Thank you for your attention.

No. It happens during bulk uploads. I always wait for them to upload. Speaking of that, most of them fail and I have to press again to upload.

Hmm OK. Are you able to make a screen recording of a bulk upload and share it with help@inaturalist.org? Thanks!

Moths coming up as ‘moth beans’

There has been a run of these, not sure if they were all ios app - but this example certainly is.

But not this one - so a bigger or different problem.

I recommend asking the observer how they added that ID, no one here on the Forum would know. The ID wasn’t added via CV, but it looks like if you type in moth, the top result is https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/311355-Vigna-aconitifolia. If you look at the taxon’s history page, you’ll see that moth was recently added as a Hindi common name. So it’s not a technical problem. I’ll remove it.

This is the old iOS app, not iNat Next. If it was made via iNat Next, you’d see soemthing different (eg https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/270740678)

The bottom “Me” button has few space due to the avatar on top and the static notification #number of species and #number of observations.
These #numbers are also present on the profile picture (an really excellent place for this kind of static data) and on the menu on top (there is enough place but i would add some kind of statiscs page) .
As the “me” page is the (only) page i use i would like it filled with only observations and remove the top balk/header as it is double information,

On a quick play, I found the new app aesthetically very pleasing, and everything has run smoothly. Such nice work! I appreciate the Activity section. I couldn’t figure out how to add an observation to a Project? Can view projects already associated with an observation.

Oh and I see that this is addressed by @tiwane already up-thread!

There’s still something wrong with the maps in the new app. Some locations just will not be found in-app, even though they can be found in Apple Maps and google maps. This was true in the old version of the app, too, but I had a workaround where I could search for street names near the location (south waterfowl way, in this case), but now that doesn’t work either.

Here’s the location in Apple Maps:

Here’s trying to find it in inaturalist next:

Not sure what I’m doing wrong, but since I can’t search for it, I just have to manually find it on the map every time I want to post an observation from certain locations
