I came across this interesting construction on a recent hike. It’s a pretty common crayfish turret, but it appears that the remains of several isopods were incorporated into the construction, which struck me as unusual. No real question here other than have you seen anything similar before? As far as I know, they’re usually just made of mud.

It seems possible this was incidental. As far as I know, these turrets are just detritus mounds from the excavation of a burrow. If an excavating crayfish happened to dig through an area where some isopods (alive or dead) were in the soil, I imagine this is more or less what would happen by default.

Crayfish are not picky eaters as far as I know. It’s as good a guess as any, but if that were the situation, I wonder why it didn’t just eat them.
