I have an older post that is an identification guide, and I would like to update it but I can’t see a way to. Am I blind or is it disabled for posts that old? Could I please have the power to edit it if so? It’s linked in a few different places and needs an update.
usually for stuff that will potentially change over time, i would make those wikis. the only problem is that i think you have a to be a “Regular” member to convert a post to a wiki. (maybe moderators and staff have that ability, too.)
I have made it into a Wiki now. Let us know if you have any problems editing it. To edit it, scroll to the bottom of the first post, and click the big “Edit” button at lower right.
Being a wiki means that anyone can now edit the top post in the same way. If that becomes a problem, let us know and we might be able to turn it off again.
Is the Forum and Nature Talk a suitable place for identification guides? In light of the issues this particular one faced, may I suggest an alterative? I have utilized my own Journal posts to offer analogous types of analysis, then added links to those posts in the More Info list on the species taxon pages. This is not an ideal way to disseminate ID information but it’s the best I’ve found so far. For instance, see the More Info list under the About tab for the moth genus Petrophila.
And here are a few more examples. My journal posts are recognizable from the small green iNat bird icon in the More Info list: Eudesmia cypris, an endemic lichen moth of west Mexico. Common Pink Band and look alike moth species.
Etc.
A great idea, but I think this is only an option for Curators, isn’t it? It does make them more accessible - perhaps regular users could flag taxa to have their guides added?
No it’s really not, and we wouldn’t likely allow any new ones to be created here. But this was an old long-standing post that had been allowed at the time, so it didn’t seem fair to unlist it now. I agree that a Journal post would be more appropriate, and would encourage the OP to migrate to that format.
