Mobile App observation remains “uploading” despite being uploaded

Platform: iOS

App version number: 1.0.5 (168)

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/296641804

Description of problem: I’ve noticed this happening for the last few days. When I add additional images to an observation, there seems to be a chance that despite uploading successfully (I.e all changes made in the app are reflected on the website) the app thinks the observation has yet to upload. On attempting to upload the observation again, the bar will fill up as usual, but the observation will remain where it is, with the “upload” button still visible. Relaunching the app doesn’t fix this. The only way I’ve been able to fix this is to delete the observation and fully reupload it.

Step 1: Upload observation as normal

Step 2: At a later time, add additional photos to the observation (in this case, microscopy)

Step 3: see your app home screen get all cluttered.

A few people have reported this but I can’t replicate with either the current public release or our beta release. How long after the initial upload do you add the other photos? Are you importing photos into the app, or taking new photos with the camera? Are you editing anything else about the observation?

Logging out of the app and logging back in should fix it.

Hard to say exactly, between a few hours to a few days? Importing from my camera roll. I may edit the description, but I can’t recall if that was done during all of the occasions this has happened. Thanks!

Can I jump in? Same here! I uploaded a few observations, then went back and edited the notes for a couple of them within probably 10-20 minutes and now they’re stuck in uploading limbo on the app — but my changes are showing on the website.

Here’s a screen recording
of what I’m doing when trying to replicate the issue. Is that what you all are doing?

Yeah! And while they’re in limbo, if you click on them again it takes you to edit mode. 24 hours later my observations are still stuck in limbo, but still showing as uploaded (with whatever edits made) on the website. I haven’t tried anything different to stop it yet, wanted to wait and see if time made a difference.

Can you please try upload again and, if it still doesn’t work, send us a log file? To send a log file:

  1. Go to the About screen and tap on the version number a few times until you see a pink Turn off Debug Mode button. Now you’re in debug mode
  2. In the side menu, tap on Debug
  3. Tap on Log
  4. Email the log to us
  5. Turn off Debug mode by going back to the About screen and tapping on the turn off debug mode button

It’s working now. Although full disclosure, I was having other issues with the app (extremely, extremely slow loading times suddenly) which I read another thread that suggested deleting and redownloading — completely forgot this thread was ongoing so I’ve lost an opportunity there for you, sorry! Will follow those steps if it does happen again, thanks.

I’m pretty sure the bug originally reported here will be fixed in the next release. I’m not able to replicate it in the current beta version.

Also seeing this with 3 observations that have had minor edits

It says ‘3 observations uploaded’ after going through what looks like an upload cycle, but then still says ‘Upload 3 observations’ when this has cleared.

Have just sent in a bug report. NB no real problem for me - the app is working nicely otherwise.
