I go into settings → advanced mode → edit observation and that works as it should.
But next time I sign in again, the app has forgotten this setting (and previous dismissals of opening screen messages!) and I have to re-set it all over again.
So you’re signing and and out of your account often in the app? I believe that’s the only time those should appear but the assumption is that people will stay logged in for a long time so they wouldn’t keep seeing the messages or editing settings like standard/advanced, etc.
I log into the app when using it, then log out until I use it again. I only use it a few times per week, so see no reason to stay logged in during all that down time.
For what it’s worth, being logged in doesn’t incur any extra cost to you or to iNaturalist. Are you concerned it’s a privacy issue?
Logging in and out does actually incur a bandwidth cost, though. When you log in, the app has to download a bunch of your observation, so it’s more taxing on the iNat servers if you log in and log out often, and if you log in while you’re on mobile data, it will use up more of your mobile data.
Either way, this isn’t a bug so I’m moving it to a different topic. I agree that keeping more personal settings for the app would be good, but I’ve been told it’s not a trivial task by our engineers.
