Question about the circle surrounding the position

Hello.

I hope I’m asking my question in the right place.

I’ve been wondering for some time what the red circle (web version of Inaturalist) surrounding the position means and what the ability to expand it is for.

It’s called “accuracy” (though it would be more appropriate to call it “precision”, see here). If you’re not exactly sure where you saw something, you can expand it to include the whole area, for example, if you know you saw something at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, you can expand the circle to include the whole garden, like this:

well, what it means depends on how it’s recorded / used, and there are many ways this is recorded / used across observations.

OK, thanks for the explanation.

Until now, I’ve mainly used it for birds of prey in flight (they generally fly high, so I often have trouble pinpointing the exact location they’re flying over).

Do you think this is a useful method?
