Is this the correct way to get curator access? I need to geofence my school for an ongoing biological survey.
I’m a science teacher at Kamo Primary School in Whangārei, New Zealand. We’re launching a school-wide citizen science initiative using iNaturalist to conduct annual biodiversity surveys across our school grounds.
To manage this long-term monitoring project, I’d like to request curator access so I can create a geofenced Place around our school site and manage student data via Collection and Umbrella projects.
I’ve uploaded observations and plan to engage students in environmental monitoring and real-world data collection aligned with our curriculum.
I’ve done a very similar project and don’t believe you would need curator access to accomplish this. You can create your own KML file outlining your school site using a website like Google Earth. You can then add it to Places on iNaturalist. You only need to be a curator if the file is larger than 1MB. Once you’ve created your place, you can create projects for it or filter observations to that location.
There is already a place for this school see: https://www.inaturalist.org/places/kamo-primary-school
tell me in case the map isn*t perfect, or in case you want to include the kamo sports park on the other side of the road, so i can fix it.
Though as others have said, I don’t think you need this to accomplish what you want.
It’s also not clear what you mean be “geofenced” - iNat doesn’t really provide geofencing in some specific uses/definitions of that term - can you describe what you need to accomplish?
As others have noted, you would need to have created observations to make a project. It’s strongly recommended that iNat users have a decent amount of experience with the platform prior to using it for assignments so that they can avoid many of the common issues with these (the Educators Guide linked above has great info for this).
