Research Grade observation not showing on map

This Research Grade observation is not showing up on the map. Amphiprion ocellaris doesn’t occur in this region, so normally it would be simple to spot an error like this… but not if it stays hidden!

Is this a bug of some sort?

Here’s the map for this taxon. No data point in the Solomon Islands.

The uncertainty in the location is too large, making it not mappable.

I assume that’s the Accuracy field in that observation, at 187 km. Is there a certain cutoff for that number?

I would suggest that observations like this not be allowed to reach Research Grade, as having them hidden from the map makes reviewing their accuracy very difficult. I was fortunate to have stumbled upon this one.

Perhaps this should be moved to the Feature Requests forum.

Yes, that accuracy value needs to be smaller in order to appear on a map. The cutoff for that number changes with latitude, but I think it’s around 30 km at the equator.

You can search specifically for observations that are RG and have large accuracy values using a query like this: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?quality_grade=research&acc_above=30000

If you’d like to make a feature request, please submit that separately from this thread.
