Searching "Turkey" or "Türkiye" as location resaults in showing observations from "Türkiye Kazakistan Dostluk Parkı"

Platform: Website

Browser, if a website issue: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Opera GX

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=216667&subview=map

Screenshots of what you are seeing:

Description of problem:

Step 1: Go to https://www.inaturalist.org/observations

Step 2: Search “Turkey” or “Türkiye” in the location searchbox.

Step 3: Instead of the entire country, it selects a park in Ankara called “Türkiye Kazakistan Dostluk Parkı”.

However, this bug doesn’t occur in the Identify tab.
This wasn’t happening before.
Resaults are same in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Opera GX.
I didn’t try testing it in Firefox.

This does not occur for me. My language in iNaturalist is Czech.

I did some identifications. Typing Turkey gave me a rectangle including bits of neighbouring countries as well. It seems to be the case of missing information.

Can’t you just select the place called “Turkey”?

Here’s a video of it.

That is normal, in the observations list you get a rectangle, in the identification window you get more accurate borders.

For more accurate country borders you go to Filter and then Place.

I tried it on other devices too(phone, another laptop, school’s smartboard) and I still got the bug. I tried in Turkish and English languages.

Thanks! Bug still occurs when I try the search box on top but trying place filter worked.

Looks like filters section and identify tab use the same system but top search bar in explore page is different.

Bug occurs here:

This problem wasn’t happening a month ago.

this is just another example of a well-known issue. using Filters > More Filters > Place is the appropriate solution for now. here’s some more relevant discussion here: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/searching-for-observations-in-a-city-returns-observations-for-a-specific-land-feature-within-the-city/43676/38.

A shorter way is to use the search box on the left and click on ‘observations’

I have been regularly searching Turkey since April, and this is a new issue for me. FYI

It’s a new problem because before May 27, 2025, Türkiye Kazakistan Dostluk Parkı did not exist in the iNaturalist database of places.
Prior to the creation of this place on iNat, selecting Turkey in the Location search box would ask Google for information about Turkey. Google would respond with the coordinates of a bounding box and the name “Türkiye”, and iNat would look for Türkiye in its place database to see if it could use its precise boundaries instead of Google’s bounding box. But Türkiye doesn’t exist in the iNat place database, it’s listed under Turkey because that was the name in 2009 when it was created. Before May 27, iNat’s backup plan for displaying search results was to use the bounding box it got from Google. However, since the creation of the new place, iNat now looks in its place database for Türkiye and finds something that it thinks is reasonably close to your search term: Türkiye Kazakistan Dostluk Parkı. So instead of using Google’s bounding box, it assumes you are looking for Türkiye Kazakistan Dostluk Parkı.
As pisum said, this is part of an ongoing issue involving how iNat interacts with Google’s place search. It is unlikely to be fixed soon, so your best option is to use the Place search under More Filters. You could also bookmark the results from Türkiye, or you can set your account’s default search place to Türkiye.

So basically it is caused by Turkey is known but Türkiye is not known by database? Maybe changing Turkey’s name to Türkiye will fix it hence country name officially is Türkiye.

Another alternative is this request to use wikidata place names: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/use-wikidata-for-place-names-and-wikipedia-descriptions/7702

Then multiple versions of the name would work to find the place.
