This is not quite a bug report because I’m not sure if it even is one, nor is it a feature request. I’m just reporting some of my observations here.
I’ve noticed that occasionally when I try to search “Southern California” using the filter by place function, the filter I’m looking for, “Southern California, CA, US” won’t show up. Instead, I’ll get a line of “Southern California Bight” filters that essentially floods the limited search space.
This is a bit of an annoyance because refreshing the page won’t change the filter search results. I will need to sort of “wait them out”, which makes me think this is something on the server’s side.
4 of these appear to be exactly the same and were created by the same person. i would probably contact the creator of those 4 places and ask them to delete at least 3 of the places. if they don’t respond, then you could flag 3 of the places and ask system curators to get rid of them.
just to clarify, only 4 of 5 of the places were the same. i’m not sure why the 4 places were created differently than the first, and i’m not sure how they were intended to be used, but it’s possible that there should have been 2 places retained in the end.
I assumed only the 1 should remain. The other 4 (all the same) had a pretty arbitrary, rectangular boundary that wouldn’t be much use – a lot of it was far out at sea and didn’t cover the coastline.
