Thank you so much mom.

  1. Tomáš, you might want to change the title of this thread from “I got this for christmas” to “Best Christmas gifts?”. This title change would make your thread more inviting, so that readers can share what they received for Christmas, or what they wanted to receive for Christmas.
  2. For anyone like me who was wondering what the language is, it’s Czech
  3. The book is the Czech version of the Collins Bird Guide https://www.amazon.ca/Collins-Bird-Guide-Lars-Svensson/dp/0008547467
  4. An interesting note about marketing: the guide covers the Western Palearctic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Palaearctic. The Czech version accurately describes this region as “Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East”. But the English version is aimed at UK buyers, so the first word is “Britain”, even though it covers the same geographic area.

Hello Adam. I changed the title. And thanks for the marketing fun fact.

I’ve been in Czechia only a few weeks but had no trouble understanding the title. “Birds of Europe, North Africa, and Near East. Third edition.” It helps that I’ve taken Russian. Although “východ” confused me a bit as it also means “exit” (same in Russian) so I looked it up.

Can you please remove the extra S at the end of Christmas?

Binoculars, 1971. The Collins field guide was the best birthday present, 1968 or 9. Peterson, Mountford & Hollom in those days.

We moved this Fall from our smalltown bungalow home of 26 years to a big city seniors condo. Downsizing is really tough!

But it’s also brought us MUCH closer (like, a 15 minute walk away) to our daughter’s family, which includes our one and only grandchild (14 months old).

And now, instead of maybe once a month (or longer) visits, we get to be there many times a week.

To be here, as the little one develops, and to be a big part of all that – I can’t think of another Christmas gift that even comes close.

Hmm… except maybe getting married to that grandchild’s grandma, almost exactly 40 years ago!

From my daughter, because she knows that under the snow the mosses are waiting.
This book is awesome, photos, illustrations, comparisons, keys, characteristics, geographic habitats
I’ll be down the rabbit hole soon…

I got this jewel beetle from my aunt (thank you Aunt Alice!!), and this absolutely gorgeous book about insects from my parents!!

The book is from a used book store near me, and I saw it a few months ago and showed my dad, I didn’t buy it though because I didn’t have the money. He told me that that same day, when I wasn’t looking, he secretly bought it and hid it in the car! I had no idea!

It’s a wonderful rabbit hole and that book is a good introduction. (P.S.: You can still find scaleworts on tree trunks, unless there’s ten feet of snow out there.)

It’s a canon R100 with a Canon RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM lens.

I love finding antique natural history books. Even if the information is out-of-date, they’re so beautifully put together.

The best gift came early; the updated Stan Tekiela Birds of Colorado, which the Doctor and I are sharing. Detailed, but pocket sized, so I don’t have to hesitate before throwing it in the backpack!

I agree! I love vintage books but especially vintage science books! :D
Ohhh nice I have Stan Tekiela’s Birds of New York, they are good field guides.
