Description of problem:
Step 1: Connect to a Mainland China server.
Step 2: Log in to iNaturalist in any browser and open the upload page.
Step 3: It loads but shows a blank white screen.(However, uploading works normally on the iNaturalist Andriod app.)
I believe the issue is with Google Maps being blocked.
I was in China for a while, and could get the app to work (as you noticed). However the website upload screen wouldn’t work unless I used an esim. The actual uploading function of observations once the upload page loads is functional, though.
I suspect it’s linked with China’s blocking of a wide range of sites, apps, and services. This can be at the national level or at the service provider level, sometimes service providers are more aggressive in their restrictions than is legally required in order to remain on the ‘safe’ side.
Try using a VPN.
I face similar issues with other apps and services in Vietnam. Both countries had similarly restrictive governments, although in general Vietnam is less so than China.
You are right. Checking shows the Google Map script didn’t load : (
