In my experience, you want:
- a relatively warm night
- little to no wind
- few competing lights (like street lights, city lights, house lights, etc). Supposedly you don’t want a bright moon either
- a nice diversity of nearby plant life
- nothing blocking the light for some distance, to draw in moths that are further away
But even then it can be hit or miss!
