Tool for Sharing iNaturalist Observations

Hi everyone,

I’m new here and excited to share a small project I’ve been working on. I created a tool to easily generate and share images of my nature observations on Instagram. I made it primarily for myself, so I can introduce my friends to the world of iNaturalist, as many of them aren’t familiar with it yet.

Using the tool is simple: just paste the link to your observation and generate a shareable image.

You can check out the demo here: https://apspace.github.io/iNaturalist-Share/
And the repository on GitHub: https://github.com/apspace/iNaturalist-Share

I’d be thrilled if this tool is useful to others in the community. If I find the time, I plan to improve it further. I’d love to hear any feedback or suggestions you might have.

if this is primarily for Instagram, why wouldn’t you just share the original photo and then caption it approrpiately?

On Facebook I share links to obs or taxon pages, depending on context.

@pisum Yeah, you can do that, too. And I realize it’s not necessary at all. I just wanted to automate it so that the style is always the same and everything looks neat.

I think it’s neat! It would be nice to have scientific name as an option to add underneath the common name as well.

I guess what you’d need to do is find a way to change the lower caption that’s in Russian to any of the other languages in the “Names” section for the taxon, then make it so the user can choose.

Thanks for the comment! Yes, that’s exactly what I plan to do soon.

I really like this! It’s incredibly clean and professional looking.
The one thing I would like is the ability to change what the “subtitle” under the common name is, maybe to the scientific name. Right now all of my observations are popping out with a subtitle in Cyrillic like yours in your example, which isn’t very practical for me or my social media following.

Hi everyone!
Finally a small update to iNaturalist Share :tada:
You can now select a language for the common name before generating the image.

Try it here: https://apspace.github.io/iNaturalist-Share/
As always, feedback and ideas are very welcome!

I really like this, thanks for putting it together.

Would it be possible to add an option to use the Taxonomic name for the smaller secondary name?

So for example this one would have

Zerene Fritillary
Argynnis zerene

Thanks for the suggestion — just updated it! :raising_hands:

The localized common name is now always shown as the primary label, and the taxonomic name appears below it.
