And it’s endangered too! What a lucky find, congrats!
Yeah, I think it’s a realistic goal to see one, but most of my moth and other insect trapping is via a UV light trap - maybe the mantidflies just don’t come to UV? Or don’t get themselves caught in the trap?
That is useful info - thanks! I use a trap because I am definitely not a night owl, but if the weather holds for later in July, friends are holding a ‘Moth Ball’ at their house one night, complete with all sorts of lights-upon-sheets, and I’ll stay up late for that.
stares at the sky, saying Do Not Rain
So many!
- a luna moth
- a saddle back caterpillar (last time I found one I was seven, so I would like to see another)
- more stick insects and mantis species
- any kind of tarantula
- more cicada species, I usually only find their shed skins.
- more caddisfly larvae, just because I love them
When I first read this thread’s title I thought there was a typo and ignored it.
Then some time later I saw it again and chuckled at it.
My list is very simple: I want to see anything I haven’t seen before!
I’ll respect the limitation to insects and not talk at length about the springtails and isopods I want to see. There’s too many to list, but a big one is toktokkie beetles, or at least any of the big desert-dwelling pimeliine tenebs. African deserts have some of the best beetles in the world in my opinion!! There is just such an incredible diversity in their morphology and so many truly stunning species.
Stenocara eburnea and Zophosis amabilis are especially striking.
I also am hoping to see the Delhi Sands Flower-Loving fly before I move out of SoCal, I’ll be making a trip to San Bernadino soon to hopefully see it or some other interesting syrphids.
