Why do I never get email notifications from the forum?

Since I’m more active now in the forum, I’d like to finally clarify an old issue.

Mar 2022 and again Apr 2026 the System informed me:

Sorry, but we’re having trouble reaching you via email. Our last emails to you were all returned as undeliverable.
My answer was:
I don’t understand that. My email is correct and hasn’t changed in many years. I receive emails from no-reply@inaturalist.org every day.
I don’t use the outlook address book.

No response from the system to that.

In my email settings I only have the 1st item “Email me when I am sent a personal message”
set to “Always”. The remaining 3 points are on “Never”.
As I understand it, with these settings, I should at least receive an email notification to my private email address for new messages (when something new gets into my inbox).

But as I said, I’ve never received a forum email to this day - what could be the reason?

Has anyone sent you messages on the forum? That is different from someone responding to your thread. I get very few of these.

I’m talking about my inbox here in the forum, of course not about answers to my posts. There are only 6 messages in my inbox, 2 of them were sent from the system (details above).

in the forum, you have to have a valid e-mail set up here:
https://forum.inaturalist.org/u/miwi2020/preferences/account

and then you have to enable e-mails for various situations here:
https://forum.inaturalist.org/u/miwi2020/preferences/emails

if you think you’ve got things set up correctly, and you’re still not receiving the e-mails you think you should be getting, you should check your e-mail spam / junk folder.

My settings (as described above) are all ok (checked it again using your links).
And no spam / junk in my private email account.
Again:
I receive emails from no-reply@inaturalist.org every day,
and these were never handled as spam.
Why is there a problem with emails from the forum ??
As the system said, emails were sent, but returned as undeliverable.
My understanding is that undelivered mails cannot get into the spam folder
b/c they could not reach my mail account at all.

@miwi2020 please make forum-related posts in Forum Feedback, not in General.

ok - next time.

The iNat Forum is run on entirely different software from actual iNaturalist, we pay Discourse.org for the software and the servers. Emails from the forum should be coming from notifications@inaturalist.discoursemail.com, so it’s an entirely different domain than normal iNat emails. Try adding notifications@inaturalist.discoursemail.com to your email contacts. Once you do that, let me know and I can send you a test message.

My outlook adressbook is empty, b/c it’s never needed.
Quite strange that is should be necessary here.
But ok, it’s worth a try.
I’ve added notifications@inaturalist.discoursemail.com to my contacts now.

Sent you a message.

as said in the mail answer: test was negative

i would make sure

if you still think your setup is valid, i would add an alternate e-mail address, and see if you can receive e-mails at that alternate address.

my registered email in the forum is a copy+paste of the entry in iNat, I don’t want mails to any other address

it’s all your choice, of course, but if you’re not willing to try a few things, you’re not going to make troubleshooting easier. if the system is saying that your e-mails are getting returned as undeliverable, it should mean that the e-mail address is invalid or your e-mail server is rejecting the e-mail. if you can’t see the problem on your end, then i’m not sure anyone else is going to be able to resolve the problem for you.

Asked @tiwane in my mail answer:
Are you sure your mail wasn’t undeliverable? (as was the case before)
That hasn’t been confirmed yet.

I had hoped this old matter could be resolved quickly. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that. Seems to be an issue that Discourse.org has to solve.

But I don’t want to cause so much effort now and spend too much time on that.
I can live without this service as I regulary check the forum for news anyway.

Would like to say good night for now.
