Wildlife populations down 73% in 50 years

I find the news that wildlife populations are down 73% in 50 years https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5y3j0vzpl3o, meaning that there is only 27% of the 1950 population remaining, beyond alarming. This has all happened in my lifetime and I am also aware that I have contributed to this. By my calculations, this is an annual reduction of about 2.6 percent, which, which, taken year to year, could be interpreted as statistical noise. However, when looked at over decades, it is a catastrophe and cannot continue much longer without dire consequences.
