Wrong tag search results

Platform (Android, iOS, Website): website

Browser, if a website issue (Firefox, Chrome, etc) : Safari

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=any&q=sequencing&user_id=jonasgruska&verifiable=any

Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):

Searching for a tag shows unexpected results (amongst the correct ones).

I have several observations tagged with the word “sequencing”. But when I searched for them via the URL above, it also shows two observations that are not tagged that way nor have that word in their description:

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/176862683
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/185486313

Am I missing something? Thanks

The search term q= searches on more than just tags and description, it also searches on the place names and on the names of the taxon. In this case, there is an alternate name for “State of Matter Life” that is causing an approximate match:

I don’t know why Life has this additional name, maybe it could be removed? There have also been previous discussions about the utility of matching to is_valid:false names, but I think people generally wanted to keep that function.

If you want to limit to tags, you can add the search term &search_on=tags, so https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=any&q=sequencing&user_id=jonasgruska&verifiable=any&search_on=tags

Thank you, limiting the search to tags that way helps.
