were you expecting that something different should happen here when clicking download; the behaviour you described is what’s intended to happen as far as I’m aware
Yes. I was expecting the web site to download my Year in Review, a process that usually means on the web, to send the displayed document to my computer, often as a PDF.
I agree that the brief summary JPEG image is a bit lame, and not what I would expect for a “Download” button. Maybe it’s intended for those who want to post an image to social media?
Note that if you want to download the statistics/data themselves instead of the graphics, you can get those in JSON format by appending “.json” to your “Year in Review” url, like this: https://www.inaturalist.org/stats/2025/rllets.json
Thank you for the explanation. It didn’t occur to me that they didn’t mean what “download” normally means, but instead that it’s function is to open a new tab showing a small high level summary. Maybe the button should be labeled something else that doesn’t conflict with the common understanding of download on the Web and with the word itself (it doesn’t actually do a download)?
Thanks also for the json tip. It’s fascinating that such a data file is there. I don’t know right off what I would do with all that data but I’ll think about it.
I just also want to say that I am very impressed with the Year in Review report. I love the information it shows and the manner in which it is displayed (except for the black background).
