Add a "Add a Conservation Status" button in Status tab for curators

Platform(s): website

Description of need:
New red lists come up every year from different geographic areas and contain many entries. As an example, I’m currently working on adding all the red lists for Switzerland. The red list of vascular plants contains 2916 entries and the red list of bees contains 631 entries.
Since early year 2024, bulk status update via spreadsheets have been removed. Since then, curators are required to add conservation statuses via the website interface. With these many entries to update, having an efficient process to add them is necessary. Currently, the only way to add a status is to go the taxon page, edit the taxon, open the “Add Conservation Status” link in another tab and add the status. Updating multiple statuses takes a long time and opens many unnecessary tabs, which is not ideal.

Feature request details:
It can be improved in a similar manner it has been done with the name additions. A button on “Status” tab of the taxon page only visible by curators could be added. That way, it would be much quicker for curators to add new statuses.
From my understanding, it would not be difficult to implement. The template for the “Add a Name” button could be reused and the link changed to the one for conservation statuses.

Proof of concept:

I’m not often affected by this, but it does seem like a sensible change for anyone who need to update conservation status info often. I support iNat making this type of process easier in order to improve the productivity of curators. Unfortunately, I’m currently out of votes!

I think you meant that it would NOT be difficult to implement.

@rupertclayton Thanks for the correction and the comment. Of course I meant “not difficult to implement”.

Made a github issue here: https://github.com/inaturalist/inaturalist/issues/4182

I’m just curious: How is conservation status determined currently? I saw a hairstreak listed as “imperiled” (with a big, red “EN” shown) in my area with NatureServe as a reference, but NatureServe called it “Apparently Secure” in my area and “Secure” overall

You can click the conservation or navigate to the taxon page to view more info.
