When an ID is provided on an observation there is a place to “Tell us why…”. It would be nice if at the taxon level if curators/experts could have a section for identification tips particularly for common mistakes.
This is another idea we’ve batted around many times without much clear resolution. Provide too much scope and we just replicate Wikipedia, but on the other hand, Wikipedia doesn’t provide enough structure for this specific need, i.e. providing just enough detail to be able to help with an ID. The other complications is that “just enough detail to be able to help with an ID” varies from place to pace, from taxon to taxon, and from person to person, so it’s hard to get right. I think our current version of this idea is something like allowing people to vote on the “usefulness” of ID remarks and show the most useful ones on the taxon pages, but that’s not without baggage either.
