Add Face ID to sign in process

Being someone who frequently checks iNat on my iPhone or iPad, it is kind of annoying to have to repeatedly sign in, even when “remember me” is checked. I think it would be easy for developers to add facial recognition to the sign in process, and would be extremely convenient for iOS users. Here is a reference: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2020/10670/

I use primarily iNaturalist on my iPhone when I’m posting and I’ve never been signed out so I don’t know if it’s an issue on your end or whatever. Face ID just seems kinda unnecessary and complicated to implement, and iCloud saves your password/username info anyway, shouldn’t it? Are you using the app or the site?

yeah, i never get logged out either, i have to manually log out of the (old) app from time to time to clear the cache as it gets huge, but that’s not frequent enough i’d care about having Face ID which presumably takes up space in the app and my phone to add functionality there

Do you use the app, or do you use the website?

As an IOs user this has never been an issue for me.

I avoid all that FaceID and similar like nonsense it is.

I don’t know how complicated it is, I assume it’s just an API call or something? But I could be wrong. I haven’t been using the new app for long enough to know if we ever get logged out but it would be nice for the new app if getting logged out happens with any regularity. Nearly all of the other iPhone apps I use that require a password have it as an option now.

I prefer the website for editing, checking the dashboard, etc.

In that case you should be able to use FaceID (or TouchID, whatever your device supports) if you use Apple’s Password manager. (Either in device settings or the new app they made for iOS 18)

@dloarie don’t forget to vote for your own request, you can do that by clicking the blue “Vote” button at the top of this page.

I have no idea how difficult, on a technical level, this would but, but I do agree with @eyekosaeder that if you use either your iPhone’s Password Manager or a third party one (I use 1Password) you can use TouchID/FaceID to enter log in information on the iNat website. That’s what I do. Do you have that set up?
