Yes, I find that the evening is really good too. The edges of the day are really best!
Here is the photo of the owl from my camera.
Will eventually make it as an observation. Just backlogged.
The lighting was low so it is a bit blurry.
Still so cool!
I saw a hairy woodpecker today.

The best photo I’ve ever taken of a bird, was of a hairy woodpecker.

Great photos! Thanks for sharing. I love the world of woodpeckers.
Let’s make Woodpeckers “Bird of the week” soon!
That’s a nice Barred owl photo!
We have a Barred owl which we hear frequently very close to our house, but I’ve only got photos of it once. (I was watching through a window, so the photos are blurry.) The owl was sitting quietly, minding its own business, when along came a crow and began harrassinf it; ultimately the owl chased the crow away. It was an exciting interaction to watch. I am always thrilled to hear that owl, and another one that often answers its calls.
Ok will do!! Great idea!
That is such a cool interaction to have seen!
I would like a woodpecker week also! Despite voting for the gulls I do not have much of a chance.
Lol me neither.
I saw my first Barred Owl two years ago in my neighborhood in January, it was really cool to see! I have heard them calling on multiple occasions!
So far this week I have only seen two species of gulls, Ring-billed and American Herring.
Awesome thanks for sharing! Also thanks for completing the bird of the week challenge.
Seems like everyone has been talking about the Barred Owl. Here is a recording of one that I heard this evening after I was done hunting.

Nice!
Nice!
They make so many different calls, I don’t always recognize them, unless they are doing their “Who cooks for you” call. In particular the “duets” and juvenile calls are interesting, but usually it takes using “Merlin” for me to figure those out.
Cornell’s website has some nice recordings:

I’ve never gotten a good recording, myself. I never seem to have my phone handy when I hear them!
Question for everyone: which birds do you find extremely difficult to photograph and why?
The white rumped swiftlet which we saw in Tonga was extremely hard. It moves very fast with little warning and by the time you get your camera up, it’s gone.
More locally for me, the rainbow pitta was my nemesis bird for about 4 years. I would hear it within a couple of metres of me, it would fly at speed across my path, it would hide behind dense branches so I could not focus on it. The pitta was a PITA.
I will be near the ocean today so I’ll probably complete the challenge.
Ok sounds good! Have a good time.
