Changes to iNaturalist iPhone app names

We released a name change to the longstanding iNaturalist app for iPhones. Now it will be called iNaturalist Classic. On your home screen, this will appear shortened as “iNat Classic.”

We’ve renamed iNaturalist Next to iNaturalist in the App Store.

iNaturalist Classic will remain available for some time as we continue to add features and improve the performance of the new iNaturalist app.

Yes, your iNaturalist observations will transfer between apps!

As long as you are logged into your iNaturalist account in both apps, you will be able to see and interact with all of your observations in both places (as well as the website, of course). The iNaturalist apps and website are just different ways to access the same iNaturalist data and community.

If you’d like tips on how to set up the new iNaturalist app so it’s similar to iNaturalist Classic, check out this short video.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this evolution!

Just a heads-up about this: if your account is not currently linked to a Google or Apple account, do not tap on these icons in the log in screen:

If you do, then iNaturalist will make an entirely new account for you and you won’t be logged in to your existing account. This has been confusing some people. Just sign in using your normal log in information.

To see whether your iNaturalist account is linked to any external accounts, go to your Account Settings then click on Applications on the left-hand side. On that page you can see that information and link or unlink your iNaturalist account from third parties like Google, Apple, etc.
