CV suggestions stop appearing in observation posting workflow

Platform: Website

Browser, if a website issue: Chrome

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/upload

Screenshots of what you are seeing:

Description of problem: Somewhat frequently, when using the upload page, CV suggestions will stop appearing. It will just display “loading suggestions” forever. When this happens the console starts throwing 401 errors, pictured above. The only fix is to reload the tab, thus requiring reuploading all the images. Uploading new images without reloading does not fix it.

Everything else still functions, typing into the ID box still finds species.

I have not been able to figure out what causes this to happen. It has occurred with large amounts of observations(50+) and even down to single observations(shown below). The best guess I have is that it is more likely to occur the longer the tab has been open but it has also occurred only 10 minutes after uploading on at least one occasion.

Ninja Edit: It is not a case of being logged out of iNaturalist either. Opening iNaturalist in other tabs and even opening the posting workflow in a new tab all function as intended

Do you remember when this started happening?

This has happened to me many times, too, in the last maybe 2 months. Sometimes it won’t work for just one observation out of a couple, but other times it will work for a few at the start and then stop working for the rest. I’ve had to try to post them blank, let it try to stop me (with the please add a category message), and hope it works afterwards. Sometimes it will come up with the main category (eg bird, plant) but no species (and it won’t let you search your own) so i’ve just have to post it with the main one and then go back and further ID it once it has posted. But more often than not i have had to post it ‘unknown’ and go back, so i don’t lose the obs by refreshing.

but if it does it on the first one, usually adding them to a new tab does the trick, as @ hawkparty said

I thought this was just an issue with my computer, so i haven’t been keeping any records, but i will try to keep a closer eye on it :)

I don’t have an exact date but I want to say this started happening in the last 2-3 months or so? It definitely didn’t used to happen, but I don’t remember exactly when because I was chalking it up to my horrid home wifi for a while. It persists even on alternative wifi networks and after we fixed our home network which is why I made the bug report now

Are you always using www.inaturalist.org, or do you use one of the network sites (like inaturalist.ca)?

Always www.inaturalist.org

Hmm. I’ve uploaded well over a hundred observations via the web in the last day, using Brave (which runs on Chromium) and haven’t noticed an issue. Do you have any extensions running? If so, try turning them off and seeing if that affects anything.
