Edit Taxon photo

iNat user just asked me if I could change a taxon photo for him.

Apparently he didn’t have the option under curation to edit an taxon photo himself.

Is there a new rule that only curators can select taxon photos or is there another rule regarding taxon photos?

please excuse the childish question.:person_tipping_hand:t4:

I am not a curator and I am still able to edit the taxon photos; “edit photos” is visible for me in the curation dropdown on the right, and I can edit them from there.

most users (aside from relatively new accounts and/or accounts with few verifiable observations) can edit taxon photos

And the limits on new accounts are quite new themselves. Prior to a few months ago, anyone at all could edit photos.

There was a bad patch when trolls were changing taxon pictures to roadkill? Then a low barrier was added to prevent bad behaviour.

I have very few verifiable observations (two dozen), but I do ID a lot; idk when I can unlock this option.

Also, is this option unlocked from the global verifiable observation count (they can be in the Needs ID stage, right?) or for that particular taxa again?

The observations don’t need to be in a particular taxon or place and they don’t have to be Research Grade. “Verifiable” just means there is enough information that someone else could verify it so it must include a date, location, and photo or sound. The thought was, once you have put in the effort to upload 50 observations, you have a good enough understanding of the site that you should be allowed to use more of the functions. Even if you’re in an urban environment there are weeds, insects, pigeons, and other wild organisms to observe.
