I don’t know if there is an official name for it, but pretty much everywhere on the site if you search for a taxa for instance using the first 3 letters of each part of the name, it will search for a pattern mtch.
On the checklist page when trying to add a species the search box there does not support this functionality, so you need to either enter the genus (and hope your desired item is in the few results returned), or enter the full string.
Example - add Cal lun here does not work as it would in every other search box i know of on the site (ingen resultater for ‘Cal lun’ means no results for Cal lun
