I normally have a combination of photos from my phone and my camera when I’m done on a hike. It’s easy to upload my camera photos to Lightroom and geotag them and get them on iNaturalist. It’s my phone where it becomes a tedious process. Individually adding them on the app can take quite a while. I tried to upload all my phone photos to a Google Drive but then they lose their location data when I redownload them on my desktop. Is there a way to transfer and keep that location data? As of now my best process is to get all my photos together from my camera and my phone on my desktop, do cropping/ editing in Lightroom, geotag, and then upload. I’m really just seeing if there’s a way to not have to geotag photos that already had location data to begin with. I’m using a Galaxy S21.
Sorry, IDK. I agree, it’s tough to upload many photos. I wish they made the website better so we could mass-upload a ton of observations at once. iNat definitely needs improvement.
I use the free version of dropbox to move my phone photos to my desktop, the location/time data is usually preserved, and when it isn’t it seems to be either that my phone photo app didn’t record it, or my desktop editing program deleted it (changing programs fixed this) - long, long ago i used google drive which at the time worked well, but they kept updating it (ugh) and i believe screwing with location and date data is what drove me off that platform. i exclusively upload on the website so i can do my uploads in batches, and i prefer to edit photos on my desktop
I’ll have to try dropbox, I’m not sure why google drive has been messing with location/ date data. Thanks for the info!
A way to mass upload via the app would be a neat feature. I haven’t tried but maybe you can go on the website on your phone and mass upload from there?
you’re welcome! i forgot to mention a couple things: free version of dropbox has a space limit, which for me works out to about 500 photos or so, so i use the dropbox folder as a temporary landing zone, and have to keep my photos moved over regularly to keep them in order. also i noticed that if i tried to edit the photos in the dropbox folder, sometimes it would randomly delete and edited photo instead of saving it (due to trying to synch it, maybe?), so moving out of dropbox folder to a static folder before editing or uploading solved this
Yes, like I said, it’s a pain on the website to mass upload them. It takes away location and if you zoom in since you can’t see the photo, you can’t zoom out and get stuck. Then, you mess everything up and have to start over again.
thats weird, doesnt do that for me
What phone do you have? I upload them from my phone into the app and it has all the information (time, date, location). I have an android though and I keep my locations service turned on at all times.
I had iPhone 12 miniature. Now, the phone is different. If I press the upload button on the website, it takes me to the app or sometimes it doesn’t even work at all and takes me to home page of iNat website.
Oh wow that’s annoying. Not my phone, I can upload tons of pictures fairly quickly right from the app.
You’re lucky.
Hey! I found out how to do it! I press and hold on that uploading button and open it into a new tab. I can mass upload them now.
