In 2022 I committed to doing art every day of the year. I decided to do tiny (2-in. sq.) watercolors (a manageable time commitment.) Almost all are of nature or landscapes, based on what I was seeing that day. I didn’t get tired of doing them until November, when winter came around again, and it became more challenging to see something new, but I wasn’t about to quit, so close to the finish line!
I used to do detailed pen and ink drawings of trees, etc. and watercolors of butterflies, dragonflies, etc. However, starting a couple of years ago my health started failing and my energy became much less, and that is when I discovered that being creative takes a lot of energy. I appreciate artists much more now. The below drawing is copyrighted/all rights reserved.
I have not doen nature journaling and general nature sketches as much recently - but I love that it gives you another perspective, you will see the species you observe and admire in another light…!
When I was younger I filled up about half a sketchbook with drawings of deep sea creatures. Now I mostly draw birds and fish. I often use photos from iNaturalist as reference.
Recent drawings, most are from a trip to Southern California, I was drawing the coastline while sitting on the shore which was delightful, and there were a lot of black phoebes out there. In Austin I’ve been seeing more armadillos around lately, so I drew one to better learn what they really look like.
