Some kind of connection to Gandalf from Lord of the Rings maybe.
I think it’s named after him.
Unfortunate names for a plant. Still super funny tho
Not an animal, but Interrupted clubmoss
Who interrupted it?
There are several crawfish with interesting common names. Wonderful Crayfish, Complete Crayfish, Powerful Crayfish, Beautiful Crayfish, Celestial Crayfish, Lame Crayfish, Depression Crayfish
And the best one of all, Crawzilla Crawdad (Lacunicambarus chimera)
It seems someone had a little too much fun naming these.
Why, a stalk of Allium rude, of course.
Curved-lined angle and Eupithecia are both leps. You’d think Eupithecia would be a primate (as is Pithecia), but it isn’t.
I think I might have been referred to that way…
Those are so cute! How’d they ever they ever get a name like flapping dingbat?
@isopodguy I don’t know, but I love it!
The specific epithet on that is also memorable: it’s named after Chaac Mool
Interesting - I wonder if the specific epithet was chosen in reference to the sacrificial use (that some have speculated), because the mollusc looks like a heart…?
Conintuing the mythological terror theme, the extinct Ankylosaur Zuul.
I recently identified some bird as a member of Anseriformes and saw “Pijijes” come up as one of the common names and think it sounds funny. Wiktionary doesn’t know the word, but searching on iNat I find that “pijije” is a Mexican common name for some Dendrocygna species, called whistling ducks in English. I thought it would be “pijij”, as the singular of “bojes” is “boj” (Buxus), but it’s “pijije”.
I love this as a name for a crab. I found one in the Seychelles several years ago, but only learned its name through iNaturalist.
