Getting home page notifications on observations I've not participated in?

Periodically I get a home page notification for an observation that I’ve not ID’d, not commented on, not favorited, not set up any alerts for, have not been tagged in, and is not from anyone I’m following.

Anyone know why that happens?

To be clear, I’m not complaining, just curious.

When I see this, it usually ends up being that I added an annotation or DQA or something less obvious to the observation. If you click the “Follow” button at the top right of one of these, does it show the option to Follow/Unfollow the observation? That should tell you if you are actually following that particular observation for some reason.

Hmm…. for some reason it says I’m following the observation, but if so I’d have expected to get notifications for the 21 other comments and IDs other people have made on it.

Weird.

I have had this happen a few times also, on observations I’ve seemingly never interacted with. No idea why, but it’s been rare enough so far I haven’t really bothered looking into it further.

I think I’ve gotten notifications on observations I’ve put into a project but not otherwise interacted with. Maybe on observations I’ve annotated. Not sure. [Edit: adding to projects, yes, but annotating doesn’t do it.]

Making annotations shouldn’t subscribe you to an observation (or else I would be drowning). I don’t think DQA votes subscribe you either. Marking either of the ‘can the community ID be improved’ checkboxes does subscribe you to an observation.

Yes, I get notifications for other users’ observations that I put into projects. I’ve been putting lots of them into “pollinator interactions with plants (PIP)” by identifying the plants. Often this helps them get IDed by bringing them to the attention of the good folks involved in the project, but then I get notifications, unless I remember to unfollow each observation. But I confess, I do like seeing how quickly some of them get to RG after languishing for a while!

But adding observation fields does.
