Help choosing the best structure for an iNaturalist project

Hello :sun: I’m a biologist working for a forest management company that currently manages almost 10,000 hectares (~25,000 acres) across 20+ sites in central and northern Portugal.

We want to create an iNaturalist project to collect biodiversity data within our properties and encourage local communities, event participants, and our field teams to record observations in the app.

I’m unsure about the best structure:

  • Should I create one general place including all our areas (and update it as we add new land), or one place per property?
  • And for projects, would a single Collection Project be best, or an Umbrella Project with separate Collection Projects for each area?

Thanks a lot for any advice!

Either one would work fine, so it depends on whether you also want to be tracking each place individually as well. However, there is a limit to how many places you can create per day, so it would be a lot easier to upload all as one place if most don’t already exist as places.

assuming that the places you manage change over time, and individual managers change over time, i would use separate places with separate projects collected under an umbrella project.

I think the public would take more interest in the separate properties with an umbrella project. The data would be more useful to you that way as well.

Definitly would want to track individually, especially to report sensitive species to the managers take in consideration while planning operations. Thank you!

Community appropriation, right? It would also be fun to compare the amount of data between communities during local events to spark a bit of competition. Thank you!

Exactly, it seems like a consensus! Thank you!
