I was pleased and a little excited to see iNaturalist as a clue in todays NYT mini crossword. The daily mini is an “easy” alternative to the Times’ often-challenging daily crossword puzzles - so the clues tend to be things that are considered fairly well-known by the puzzle’s author and editors. I thought this was a neat and somewhat unconventional indication of iNat’s growing popularity.
I was similarly delighted. I agree with it feeling like recognition of iNat being part of pop culture (in the US at least, given the source).
Publication whose crossword you might appear in if you’ve made it big (12)
iNat is MORE than an app, though
A lot of the problems discussed on this forum happen BECAUSE people think it’s just an app
Is PlantNet just an app?
What do you mean?
You are not wrong. But there are those that think of anything that is not an operating system as an app.
Crossword clue
12 letters
Yes?
Of all the words they could’ve used to describe iNaturalist, I was a little surprised they went with “app.”
To damn with faint praise
I made a crossword clue as a joke, as a reply to this topic. :)
The clue is as shown in my post and the answer is 12 letters long. (The answer shouldn’t be too hard to figure out, using information in this thread’s first post.)
I was just about to make a post about this! One of my friends who knew I love iNat showed me and I thought it was really cool
APP
is a pretty common word in NY Times Crosswords and this clue construction is often used for it. For an easier Monday-level APP
clue they’d probably use more widely recognizable apps like Spotify or Instagram.
Being housebound by this fierce winter weather made me come up with this:
Clue:
A list in a rut (anag.) for a popular citizen science org.
Moved the above post to this category as there’s already a discussion about iNat in the crossword here.
So I realized that I was kind of quoting a post here, that the new users might not be aware of. Here is the post:

Monday-level? Do the NYT (mini)-crosswords get progressively harder throughout the week? :D
Not sure if this is a rhetorical question or not, but yes.
Thanks. ^^
And it wasn’t rhetorical. As I’m German, I don’t know the NYT crossword (I only do the wordle every now and then). The crosswords getting harder throughout the week is something that never would have occurred to me, so it’s interesting. Haha
I wonder if the ‘weekly learning curve’ is unique to NYT.
Never heard of that before, and English, is my language.
I also know nothing about the New York Times and its crossword, and I was born and raised in North America, and I’ve lived there for nearly 50 years
