iNat Next truncates long species names

App version number, if a mobile app issue (shown under About in the side menu): 0.45.0 (114)

Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):
When viewing a species with a long name, the name is truncated so that the ending (e.g. variety or subspecies) cannot be seen. (For example, this observation of Astragalus misellus var. misellus.)

Step 1: in the explorer, search for Astragalus misellus misellus in observations.

Step 2: open an observation.

Step 3: try to confirm that the correct variety is showing, but can’t see variety names.

I tried clicking on the three dots at the end of the name, hoping that would expand it, but that just sent me to the species page.

This seems to be a screen size and text size issue - I have a small-screen iPhone SE with larger than default text size. A workaround is to reduce my system font size, but then the smaller fonts in iNat Next are virtually unreadable. I think this falls under the issue of accessibility - the full text should display regardless of the phone’s screen resolution and text size.

This is also an issue in the species search field itself - matching names are truncated there as well.

Possible fixes:

  1. reduce the font size for species name display (this is why the old app works OK for this). This probably won’t work for some of the longest names.
  2. allow the app screen to be rotated to landscape view so the longer names fit the screen width.
  3. allow long names to wrap to the next line.

Yup, definitely a bug. We’ve got it in our queue: https://github.com/inaturalist/iNaturalistReactNative/issues/2087
