I will be visiting Leipzig, Berlin, and Dresden for a week at the end of May.
I was wondering if anybody could recommend any good places to see plants in this area?
Elbsandsteingebirge near Dresden - my visits there were a long time ago before I even had a proper camera, wished I had time to go back for some iNatting.
Ahhh, I wanted to go hear when I was in Dresden last year but didn’t have the time. Looked amazing!
Berlin: https://www.natur-park-suedgelaende.de/ This is a former railway yard that has been turned into a combination of post-industrial monument/art installation and nature park.
Leipzig: if you have time to travel a bit outside Leipzig itself, I recommend the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland and specifically the area around Balgstädt/Freyburg (nature preserve “Tote Täler”), which is famous for its orchids. I’ve also found that some of the former mining sites in the area are botanically quite interesting, e.g. Mücheln/Braunsbreda (you really want to also bring a good telephoto here, though – it’s a major nesting site for bee-eaters and the lake is a great place for seeing birds in general).
