Internet coverage determines which version of app I can use

Platform:iOS

App version number, if a mobile app issue:latest update/all

Browser, if a website issue:

Description of problem: the two versions of the iNaturalist app appear to require different qualities of internet coverage. The classic version works for me in my main observation area rarely the new version. I only have one bar indicating connectivity most of the time due to mobile towers not providing coverage in valleys. I’m in Australia, say no more.

It works fine when mobile coverage is adequate in suburban areas

Am I the only one with this issue?

My concern is if the classic app was discontinued my iNaturalist days would for the most part be over.

I have seen comments in the forum to this end - it may be a data issue? Not sure, but I have seen some folks say they have trouble in remote areas with the newer app and end up using the original app.

iNat needs to offer a lite version ? Or - only load that bit when I click on it. For example the map for each obs - I don’t always need ALL the info and ALL the dots NOW!

Can you please specify what you mean here? What exactly is the issue with the new app?

Sorry for late reply, the new app does not load or if it does I am unable to upload observations. My iPhone is up to date perhaps too old?

I just used the app in an area with no or little mobile coverage yesterday, both with airplane mode on or off and it worked fine to make observations. Only issue is that common names aren’t always shown in the app, but there’s not much that can be down about that.

Are you saying the app won’t open at all? Or that the app opens fine but that you cannot make a new observation? If you can please be specific as possible about exactly what it is that’s going wrong, that will help us understand the issue.

Sorry to respond so late again. I uninstalled and then reinstalled the ap, it seems to work a bit better but it does seem to need a much stronger internet connection than the Classic version does. I can upload images quickly with classic but the ‘new app’ struggles in my area. It may only upload one photo instead of multiples. Australia has really abysmal internet coverage compared to most other countries unless you are in a major population area …. tjat doesn’t have hills… or trees
