Language settings & common names (Slovene) (+places definitions)

Hi,

I am postig here since I am not sure of this is a bug or just how things are.

This pertains to Slovene translation of the site and the display of common names of taxon.

I wanted the site to remain in english, but for taxon names to be displayed: common name (Scientific name; and common names in Slovene

The way things are set up it seems to me i should be able to achieve this by:

  1. set the language of the page to english ( edit your account & profile > account > language/locale),
  2. and then I should be able set the way taxon names are displayed ( edit your account & profile > content &display > Names > lexicons)

I can, however, only ever get common names in Slovene if action under 1. is also set to Slovene.

Is this how things are, did I miss something or is this a bug?

An additional pronlem I have is when I work with page in Slovene, places are not the same as when I work in English. When page is in English, if I search for a place Slovenia, I get a shape of Slovenia, when it is set on Slovene, I get a bounding box with Slovenia in it; with exactly the same search term.

Thank you for help!

( i do not like to have the page in Slovene, the translation is icky, i tried to fix it, but until now I did not have the patience to reverse the changes previous users made)

Can you share 2 screenshots - one of your account settings under Content & Display>Names as well as what you see on this page https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=8228&view=species?

This probably has something to do with how iNaturalist relies on Google Maps and they prioritize searches based on language I think. I would recommend using Places (under Filters>More Filters) and not the Location box.

I have the Language/Locale set to English. And names like on the provided screenshot. I think this is also what you want. When I search for place Slovenia it is in the shape as it should be (more or less) not bounding box.

I had a strog feeling this was not directly related to iNat, yes, but to google.

Thanks for the places filtering tip!
