I recently found a shark tooth. Sadly, I didn’t seem to have enough to identify it? How can I learn to identify from which shark did a tooth come from? And what has been your coolest find? Let me know!
Hey, why not to make a thread about beachcombing? I would like to receive your anecdotes and coolest finds. It is something there is a lot to talk about, and although I have always enjoyed, I have been recently taking it a bit more seriously.
There are lots of interesting fossil shark teeth, too, so resources for identifying those might also have some good pointers on general ID traits to look for when all you have is the tooth.
Oh, that’s brilliant how you have overlaid the dimensions on the third photo!
I never would have thought of that.
Living in a land-locked location myself, I sadly will be unable to contribute any observations. But that won’t stop me from reading further…
I’m kind of surprised there are no projects or observation fields for shark teeth. It might be helpful to create a traditional project and add relevant observations to it to serve as a hub for identifiers, journal posts etc.
Here’s a filter for shark observations with “Evidence of presence: Bone”, many of which are teeth: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?taxon_id=551307&term_id=22&term_value_id=27
That will help you find identifiers and maybe some helpful comments. It looks like the main identifier has already given his thoughts on your observation, so you may be out of luck with this specific tooth.
