I have to log in about once a week. That’s after checking Remember me and checking in sometimes daily. Is that the norm? Is there a fix?
That seems more frequent than what I have to do. I get asked to log in again more like once every few weeks.
I’m never logged out. Perhaps you have something which removes your login token? Not sure if antiviruses would do that, or perhaps browser extensions?
My phone browser logs me out of the iNat website pretty frequently, but my laptop pretty much never does.
I’m thinking not since it only happens here.
Which browser? Are you entering a password, or are you logging in via a third party like Google?
Not OP but I have to log in again every few weeks on firefox, logging in with a password.
I haven’t kept track of the frequency, but yes, I, too, periodically have to re-login, even though I visit iNaturalist every day and never intentionally logout. Somehow I assumed it was a timed security feature, like the way your bank or credit card page will log you out after several minutes of inactivity.
I always thought this had more to do with the operating system or browser settings for cookies and the like, not something on the iNat end of things generally.
My laptops log me out around that once per week cycle OP mentioned.
My phone never does.
happens to me maybe every week or two on both Chrome and Firefox
It happened to me several times, when I tapped some words in the comment areas and clicked “Done”…Oops, I was required to log in first. And after I logged in, I found all those words I tapped were disappeared, so I had to retap them.
I get logged out randomly once a months or so. I never was forced or reminded to log in. I am always logged in to the app and usually logged in on PC too.
Browser is Google Chrome Version 141.0.7390.54 (Official Build) (64-bit). Using a password. Not logging in through a third party. Oh, and on a PC.
Yes, I’ve had this happen to me but I think this is something else. If you open an observation in a browser window, let it sit for (say) 24 hours, and then type in a comment, the process fails and you lose the contents of the comment. If you reload the observation in the browser window and retype the comment (from memory), the process succeeds.
Even though I know this is issue, I keep falling into the trap. It is very frustrating to spend (say) 15 (or more) minutes writing a comment and then having it disappear! Is there a bug report or feature request for this?
The only time I have to login to iNaturalist is if something disruptive happens on my computer, say, an operating system upgrade or a browser upgrade. Other than that, I stay logged in indefinitely.
Platform: Chrome browser on Mac OS
One workaround would be to type it, then copy to your clipboard. Then you can just paste it back after logging in.
For the past few days, I’ve also been finding myself logged out.
Today, this happened at least once.
Safari 18.4 (20621.1.15.11.10) on Mac OS
This is not typical.
Based on this comment, I suspect there might be a misunderstanding (due to my poor explanation, I suppose).
This is a known bug and there is no (reasonable) workaround. Rather than try to explain again, I was able to track down the old bug reports:
https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/error-when-submitting-id-or-comment-on-tab-left-often-from-previous-session/3753
https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/failed-to-save-comment/18941/5
If you’ve been bitten by this bug, please make a comment on the bug report so we can get this fixed. Thanks!
Well, I didn’t say that the workaround was reasonable. But in those threads you linked, someone said,
I was suggesting preemptively copying the comment. Granted, it’s cumbersome to try to remember to do that before the page reminds you and it’s too late.
